Herbert "Junebug" Johnson(co1982), a former FHS athlete, plays tailback for the University of Missouri - Columbia, Missouri
at the junior varsity level. In a recent game against William Jewell College, Johnson carried the ball ten times
for 32 yards and caught one pass for five yards as the Mizzou Tigers walloped the William Jewel Cardinals 43-0. Johnson
was on each of the Tigers punt-return teams. He returned two of them for 52 yards, the second was a 42 yard effort
that set up Mizzou's third touchdown. Johnson made fair catches on two others and a fifth he allowed to roll dead.
In his only varsity appearance, on a punt return against Kansas State, Johnson fielded the ball but was tackled
immediately.

The Callaway Memorial Hospital Auxiliary met with 69 members and guests attending the noon luncheon. President Julia
(Maddox(co1967))-Dunlap opened the meeting and Esther Randolph, treasurer, gave the financial report. The net profit
from the Country Store was approximately $4,200. The highlight of the luncheon was establishing a policy to recognize
an auxiliary volunteer each year. This year's volunteer is Mrs. Ardyth Yates, who is director of the hospital gift shop. In her
17 years as director, Mrs. Yates has given untold hours of her time and efforts in maintaining the gift shop and
selecting items for patients and visitors. President Dunlap presented Mrs. Yates a brass candlestick with a candle
to carry out the theme "You Light Up My Life" for her dedication and contributions to the hospital volunteer program.

Columbia scored an 18-0 victory over the Fulton "Alumni Team" in the annual "Turkey
Bowl" at the FHS stadium. An estimated 300 persons attended. The Fulton team's
chances wer spoiled by pass interceptions, although the Fulton game was held pretty
much in check by the visitors. Also, Fulton never got beyond the Columbia 30-yard
line. The Fulton players, many of them playing their first game in several seasons,
escaped with minor bumps and bruises and many of them were nursing sore muscles today.
Billy March(co1957) suffered the most painful injury, a finger dislocation. Columbia
led 12-0 at the half and Fulton never threatened seriously in the second half.
Coach M.L. Robertson used Gene "Jeep" Maupin(co1954) in the quarterback slot, with
David Holt(co1957), Billy March and Bobby Wagers(co1957) doing most of the ball carrying.
Among linemen who turned in yoeman service were Jim Leach(co1956), Harold Bowen(co????),
Paul Learish(co????) and Ted Harrison(co1956).

There is great happiness at Fulton High School after the Hornets, going through a winless year last season, snapped
their streak last night with an overtime win against the Centralia Panthers. They had lost 21 straight games last
year and the final six contests the year before. Behind the consistent scoring of Clarence Ferguson(co1959), the Hornets
took an overtime victory against the host squad in the Centralia Invitational Tournament. Coach Don Maxey said that
it was a team victory with all of the squad members turning in fine jobs. Coach Maxey gave starting nods to Sonny
Pasley(co????), Tom Fleming(co1960), Earl Ray(co1961), Clarence Ferguson and John Horstdaniel(co1960). Ferguson was the top scorer in the game with
22 points and Earl Ray, sophomore center, was runner-up with 15 points.

Ben W. Freiberger(co1908), county superintendent of schools, who has just completed his first round of visits among the rural schools of Callaway county reports that he has covered 2,523 miles in looking after these official duties. Since there are 110 schools in the county, it makes an average of about 22 miles to each school. Mr. Freiberger was required to cover the largest mileage in visiting the Bush school, north of Portland, on the Montgomery-Callaway county line. In his two annual visits of county schools last year, Mr. Freiberger covered 4,952 miles and his total this year probably will be close to the same mark. Mr. Freiberger has visited as many as four schools in a day, but he has done that on only rare occasions, since a visit requires considerable time and his average of schools visited is usually from two to three a day.

The origin of "Highland Games" pre-dates recorded history. These events are held
throughout the year in Scotland and other countries as a way of celebrating Scottish
and Celtic culture and heritage, especially that of the Scottish Highlands. Certain
aspects of the games are so well known as to have become emblematic of Scotland, such
as the bagpipes, the kilt, and the heavy events, especially the caber toss (see photo
below). While centered on competitions in piping and drumming, dancing, and Scottish
heavy athletics, the games also include entertainment and exhibits related to other
aspects of Scottish and Gaelic culture. Source: North American Scottish Games Athletics Website.
30Oct08 • Roundabout Coming to Fulton
A roundabout intersection will be replacing the bridges and stoplights at 2nd and Market Streets in Fulton. The traffic roundabout was approved by the Fulton City Council on 28Oct08. Roundabouts have the following characteristics:
• Vehicles entering the roundabout yield to vehicles in the roundabout; i.e: vehicles inside the roundabout have the right of way.
• Roundabouts are used to maintain slower speeds through an intersection.
• Parking is prohibited on the roundabout roadway.
• Pedestrians are (usually) prohibited from the central island.
• All vehicles circulate (counterclockwise) around the central island in the same direction.
Roundabouts are safer than both traffic circles and traditional intersections—having 40 percent fewer vehicle collisions, 80 percent fewer injuries and 90 ppercent fewer serious injuries and fatalities of a sampling of roundabouts in the United States, compared with the intersections they replaced.
Roundabouts also reduce points of conflict between pedestrians and motor vehicles and are therefore considered to be safer for them. However, roundabouts, especially large fast moving ones, are unpopular with some cyclists. This problem is sometimes handled on larger roundabouts by taking foot and bicycle traffic through a series of underpasses.
At intersections with stop signs or traffic lights, the most serious accidents are right-angle, left-turn, or head-on collisions that can be severe because vehicles may be moving fast and collide at high angles of impact. Roundabouts virtually eliminate those types of crashes because vehicles all travel in the same direction and most crashes are glancing blows at low angles of impact.
In addition to improved vehicle and pedestrian safety, and in spite of lower speeds, roundabouts dramatically outperform traffic circles in terms of vehicle throughput and, because a roundabout's circular traffic is always moving, they outperform ordinary junctions with traffic signals as well.
Cyclists do not get the same safety benefits from roundabouts as vehicle drivers. An analysis of the national crash database in New Zealand for the period 1996–2000 shows that cyclists were involved in 26% of the reported injury crashes at roundabouts, compared to 6% at traffic signals and 13% at priority controlled intersections. Cyclists are two to three times as likely to be in a crash at a multi-lane roundabout than at a traffic signal.

With undiminished vigor, 65-year-old Dorothea Clark teaches deaf students how to take pride in themselves and their work. And after working 24 years as a dry cleaning instructor in the vocational program at the Missouri School for the Deaf, there is nothing she'd rather be doing. Although she was named Missouri School for the Deaf Teacher of the Year in a ceremony Wednesday, the award does little for her ego, she says. "For me to be teacher of the year has very little significance except for the fact that my peers did it to me," she says. According to MSD superintendent Peter Ripley, the dry cleaning veteran was an excellent choice by the teachers' association. Raised by deaf parents, Clark, who is able to hear, said she preferred sign language to speech as a youngster. She didn't learn to speak well until her parents sent her to a special school at the age of five. Eldon Shipman(co1943), principal of the vocational department, says Clark's experience has been an asset to the school. He wonders why it took the teacher's association so long to give her the annual award.

On January 3, Assistant Police Chief Bill Reifsteck will celebrate his 25th anniversary on the Fulton Police force. Through the years, he has weathered many a change. Capt. Reifsteck has seen Fulton's finest grow from eight to 23 and the number of patrol cars expand from one to seven. Over those 25 years, Fulton's population has increased by about 7,000. A problem once faced by Fulton Police has fortunately, disappeared. Reifsteck remembers a time when he often worked in "plain clothes." He was not an undercover agent. Those were the days of panty raids, when Westminster students sought vicarious thrills by storming the dormitories at William Woods, demanding samples of the girls' underclothes. "When you have 50 to 200 boys running, you just don't have time to get into uniform," Reifsteck says. "Really and truly it wasn't all the boys' fault. The panty raids, it seems, were often solicited over the telephone by excitement-seeking William Woods students," he added. This past July, the Fulton Optimists named Reifsteck "Law Enforcement Officer of the Year."

Helen Weigle-Danuser(co1932) of Fulton, Missouri recalls Sir Winston Churchill's "Iron Curtain" speech in early March 1947.
" . . . It was in the gymnasium of Wesminster College, My Sister and I both had tickets. There were a lots of reporters and telephone wires for the press to use. My father was in his robe - He was a professor of chemistry at Westminster, and the faculty sat in front of the podium. Churchill with his rosy cheeks came in. They had just had lunch next door in the college president's house. . . ." It wasn't so much the world leader's rousing words that left the young woman awestruck. Helen confessed, "I don't remember much about the speech. I was so taken with the dignitaries I forgot to pay much attention." Helen was the founding president of the Friends of Winston S. Churchill Memorial & Libray and has served on its board since it began in 1977. Missouri. Source: Kingdom of Callaway - Chamber of Commerce - Online Magazine.

While Roger Horstman was driving through Missouri, he noticed that many towns have a bench or two on the square's lawn on which the weary can sit to rest their feet, and where old-timers can sit to discuss the issues of the day. As maintenance supervisor of the Callaway County Courthouse, Horstman is responsible for the building's upkeep; and he didn't see why Callaway shouldn't keep up with the Audrains and Montgomerys. Horstman took his notion to Western District Judge Paul Willett(co1943), who thought it was a good idea. Willett then conferred with the other county judges and the project was approved. A pine bench, painted red, was built and installed in mid-July on the west side ot the courthouse lawn. Once again Callaway was up there with the best of them. The cost? $53.00. Surely a small price to pay for the people's comfort and the county's pride.

Bush Elementary School Principal Billie Taylor was impressed with all aspects of opening day of school. "The students and teachers seem so enthusiastic this year," she said, adding, "It's always so nice coming back to a school that's freshly cleaned." Garnell Watson's second-grade class has already exhibited more exuberance than others she has taught for the last 36 years. "They are really an excited bunch," Watson said. The best part of the day was not only recess, lunch and physical education, but spelling and math as well. "What I like about school is meeting friends and having another nice teacher. It's fun being in P.E. and math class and spelling. I just think it's fun being back in school," said second-grader Holly Brooks(co1994) of 1108 Chippewa Drive in Fulton. Betty Brockett of Millersburg said she was a little frightened at first about starting school. "I was scared because I was home all summer. But I got over it when I met some kids. It was in the 1930s when Fulton held its last street fairs. But this year, the tradition was revived. Billy Willet remembered the street fairs of the 30s when her mother allowed her the freedom to roam the fair as long as she stayed on Court Street between Fifth and Sixth streets. "Up on the corner where J.C. Penny's is, they always had the Algoa Reformatory Band playing," Willet said. And there was also a carnival. Helen Danuser also remembered the street fairs of the 30s. "There was straw on the streets and cages for the chickens and hogs. The cows were tethered at the courthouse," she said. "We dressed up and came downtown. And then we went home, dressed up again, and came back to eat. I remember that I wore my first fur coat," Danuser said, adding that the fairs were then held in early October. Jerry Hartman recalled earlier fairs. "Years back we had a cow milking contest right here on the street." Callaway County Presiding Judge Charles Ausfahl(co1954) was the first one to sit in the North Callaway volunteer Fire District's dunking booth. Rep. Gracia Baker passed by. Remarks from the over-confident judge on the dunking bench called her skill with a softball into question. In three trys, Backer threw three strikes, leaving the judge wet and her pitching reputation intact.
